What are MIL-SPEC parts and MCOTS?

MIL-SPEC parts are components built to a military specification. Most of the ones you'll see are governed by a MIL-DTL, or Detail Specification, which defines exactly how the part has to be built, tested, and documented. When a part conforms to its MIL-DTL, it meets every requirement in that spec, which is why any certified source building to the same MIL-DTL produces a functionally equivalent part. MCOTS parts are military commercial off the shelf parts. They're not MIL-SPEC parts in the strict sense; they're commercial off the shelf (COTS) components designed to meet or exceed military specifications. Glenair connector families, like their Series 800, are a good example.

What makes MIL-SPEC and MCOTS parts different

Three things set these parts apart from a standard commercial component:

The supplier doesn't matter, as long as they're certified. With most parts, you care about the exact manufacturer. With MIL-SPEC parts, any certified source that builds to the governing spec is a valid option. That opens up your sourcing rather than locking you to one name.

They're often made to order. A lot of these parts aren't sitting on a shelf. They get built when they're ordered, so it's normal not to see listed stock for a given part number.

The part number tells you what the part is. MIL-SPEC and MCOTS MPNs encode the build details right in the number, so we can read the number and know exactly what you're asking for without extra back and forth.

Buying MIL-SPEC and MCOTS parts through Cofactr
